Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types 38 to 40 words per minute. Anything above 60 WPM is considered fast, and professional typists usually sustain 75 to 90 WPM. Most office and clerical roles ask for 35 to 45 WPM with high accuracy.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is counted as five characters, including the space that follows it. Net WPM divides your correctly typed characters by five, then divides that by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM does the same but counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
Accuracy matters more. Errors reduce net WPM directly, and in most typing exams a low accuracy score disqualifies you regardless of speed. Practising at roughly 80 percent of your top speed until accuracy passes 97 percent produces faster long-term gains than chasing raw speed.
What does the consistency score mean?
Consistency measures how steady your speed was across the test. A typist who starts at 70 WPM and fades to 30 has the same average as one who holds 50 throughout, but far worse consistency — which points to a stamina problem rather than a speed problem.
