Touch typing means typing without looking at your hands. That is the entire definition. Your fingers learn where the keys are, so your eyes are free to stay on the screen โ which is where the real gain comes from, not from finger speed.
If you currently hunt and peck, this is worth 20โ30 WPM to you. It is the single largest improvement available.
Start with the home row
Rest your fingers on these eight keys. This is home, and every movement starts and ends here.
| Hand | Fingers rest on |
|---|---|
| Left | A S D F โ little, ring, middle, index |
| Right | J K L ; โ index, middle, ring, little |
Both thumbs sit on the space bar.
The one rule that makes it work
Every finger returns to its home key after every keystroke.
Reach up to E with your left middle finger, then bring it straight back to D. Reach down to N with your right index, bring it back to J. Your hands should look almost still.
This is what stops you needing to look. If your fingers drift, you lose your reference point and your eyes have to go find it again.
Learn the keys in this order
Do not try to learn the whole keyboard at once. Add a small group, drill it until it is boring, then add the next.
- Home row โ A S D F J K L ;
- E and I โ the two most common vowels above home
- R, T, U, O โ the rest of the common top row
- N and M โ the bottom row keys you will use most
- Remaining top row โ Q W Y P
- Remaining bottom row โ Z X C V B
- Capitals โ using the opposite shift key from the letter
- Punctuation and numbers โ last, and least urgent
Most people can do steps 1โ4 in under a week of short sessions.
Your speed will drop first. This is normal.
For the first few days you will be slower than your old hunt-and-peck speed, and it will feel like going backwards. It is not โ you are replacing a habit, and the replacement is temporarily worse than the thing it replaces.
Almost everyone who fails at touch typing quits here, in week one, and goes back to looking. If you push through the dip, you pass your old speed in roughly two weeks and then keep going. See how long it takes for a realistic timeline.
Rules for the first two weeks
- Never look down. Not even once, not even for one key. Looking is the habit you are trying to delete. Cover your hands if you have to โ more on that here.
- Go slowly. Accuracy first, always. Speed is a by-product of not making mistakes.
- 15 minutes a day beats two hours on Sunday. This is motor learning; it consolidates between sessions, not during them.
- Use the correct finger every time, even when a wrong one is closer. One exception becomes a permanent exception.
- Type real words, not random letters. Common letter pairs are what your hands actually need to learn.
When you are ready to test
Once you can find all the letters without looking, start measuring. The typing test gives you speed and accuracy together โ and in the early weeks, watch accuracy, not speed.
If drilling bores you, the games train the same thing while your attention is on something else.
Common questions
- What is the home row in touch typing?
- The eight keys A, S, D, F for the left hand and J, K, L, semicolon for the right. Your fingers rest there between keystrokes and return there after every reach.
- Why do the F and J keys have bumps?
- So you can locate the home position by feel instead of by looking. Placing your index fingers on the two bumps puts all eight fingers on the correct keys automatically.
- Should I learn touch typing if I already type fast by looking?
- Usually yes. Hunt-and-peck has a ceiling around 40 to 50 WPM because your eyes must keep moving between keyboard and screen. Touch typing removes that ceiling, though you will be slower for the first week or two.
