You test at 58, then 49, then 63, all within ten minutes. Nothing is broken. Day-to-day variation of 5โ10 WPM is completely normal, and it is larger than a month of genuine improvement โ which is exactly why it fools people.
What moves your score
1. The text you got
The single biggest factor. Common short words type far faster than long or unusual ones. Two runs on the same test with different passages can differ by 10 WPM before you have done anything.
2. Test length
Short tests score higher. A 15-second run catches you at peak concentration on a lucky passage; a 3-minute run averages out your stumbles and includes fatigue. A 15-second score is not comparable to a 1-minute score.
3. Warm-up
Cold hands cost 10โ15%. Your first run of the day is nearly always your worst โ a two-minute warm-up removes most of this.
4. Time of day
Most people are measurably slower first thing in the morning and late at night. The size of the effect varies, but the pattern is consistent within a person.
5. Fatigue and concentration
Typing is a concentration task. Tiredness, hunger, a noisy room, or having just finished something demanding all show up in the number.
6. The keyboard
Switching machines costs a few WPM until your hands recalibrate, and laptop keyboards with short travel behave differently from a desktop board.
7. How the test handles errors
Some tests block you until a mistake is fixed, some let it through and penalise later, some only count uncorrected errors. This alone changes scores by several WPM between sites โ the mechanics are in how WPM is calculated.
8. Punctuation and capitals
Turning them on typically costs 10โ20%. If one site includes them by default and another does not, comparing the two is meaningless.
9. Trying too hard
Chasing a personal best usually produces a worse one. Pushing past your controlled speed raises the error rate, and errors are subtracted from the score directly.
How to measure honestly
Keep the conditions identical. Same test, same length, same time of day, same keyboard, same warm-up. Everything above is a variable; hold them still and the number starts meaning something.
Use a longer test. Three minutes at minimum for a real reading. Anything under a minute is entertainment.
Track your average, not your best. Take three runs and average them, or track a weekly average. A personal best is a lucky sample and will not repeat on demand.
Test weekly, not daily. Daily testing shows you noise, and turns practice into performance โ you start protecting your score rather than pushing past it. More on practising properly.
Write it down. Memory is generous about good runs and forgetful about bad ones. Without a record you will believe you are faster than you are.

Improvement in motor skills is stepped, not smooth: flat for weeks, then a jump. The flat stretch is where the gain is built. If it has genuinely been over a month, see breaking a plateau.

Once a week, warm up for two minutes, take three runs of the same length, average them, write the number down.
